History

The title "Freihof" has been a special privilege to us since the 15th century, since it was only given to a very few "taprooms". Connected to this title were especially honorable hospitality, which was decreed by the local lord in the Middle Ages in form of an inheritable right.

The tapping and brewing rights for the Freihof am Roland date back to a decree made in 1532 by the Danish King Frederik II.

An old chronicle cites:
In the year 1683, innkeeper and brewer Peter Heinsohn founded the parent house "Roland-Kellereien" with the words: "Work is the citizen's ornament, blessing is the labour's prize". The wine trader Heinrich Meyer continued with Wedel's Freihof-privilege for the well-being of all the guests.

Today, there are very few "Breweries and Taprooms" which can claim to have been established in the same town, in the same house, and dedicated to the same purpose for over 300 years. We of course feel specially dedicated to this tradition which has lasted for more than 3 centuries.

After completing a necessary and extensive renovation, the Freihof now presents itself as a hotel with a vaulted celler and wine room, in which small, rustic meals can also be enjoyed. We offer an pleasurable stay for any festive occasion with our endearing team and exceptional kitchen.
